All of the natural gas transported by the DBNGP is produced in the offshore Carnarvon Basin on the North West Shelf. The natural gas is presently sourced from two production facilities, the Woodside operated Karratha Gas Plant and the Apache operated Varanus Island facilities.
The Karratha Gas Plant processes gas produced by the North West Shelf Gas Joint Venture partners, Woodside, Shell, BP, BHP Billiton, Chevron and Mitsubishi / Mitsui.
Natural gas from the Apache operated Harriet (Apache / Tap / Kufpec), East Spar and John Brookes (both Apache / Santos) Joint Ventures, as well as Apache and Santos in their own right, is processed on Varanus Island. Construction is underway on the new Devil Creek production facilities which will process gas from the Apache / Santos Reindeer fields.
Additional investment in the Chevron Operated Gorgon Project, and the BHP Operated Macedon Project mean that in the next few years supply into the DBNGP will be coming from at least 5 different upstream projects.
